Thanksgiving Hawaiian Style

November’s in full swing around the Honolulu apartment rentals, which means that pretty soon, Thanksgiving will be here and it will be time to feast. Now, if you’ve experienced a Hawaiian Thanksgiving before, then you probably already know what to expect as far as those fine food options and special traditions go. If you haven’t, however, then boy are you in for a treat! Today, we’re going to be filling you in on a few of the amazing wonders you should expect when you join the table to celebrate Thanksgiving — Hawaiian style.

The Secrets to Hawaiian Thanksgiving Hospitality

The main ingredient to enjoying a Hawaiian-styled Thanksgiving, if you weren’t already aware, is the bevy of unique dishes that you’ll enjoy at the table. Check out this sample Hawaiian Thanksgiving Menu from Better Homes & Gardens, and you’ll see that those food options take the Thanksgiving delight to a whole new level.

Having choices like sweet & spicy meatballs, coconut sweet potatoes, and bacon-date stuffing bring a much needed twist to the tried and true Thanksgiving favorites, one that infuses the spirit of the tropics into each and every bite (or sip, in the case of drinks like the delectable coconut cream island punch).

Today, though, we’re going to take a look at three special recipes, delivered courtesy of decorated Hawaiian chefs. Whip these up at your Thanksgiving feast, and you’ll surely be the talk of the neighborhood for at least a few months to come.

Chef James Donahue shared a “formerly secret” recipe from his grandmother: a kind of roast turkey that makes liberal use of pineapple juice, soy sauce, and sweet brown sugar. After a delicate brining process, the end result is a juicy and tender hunk of poultry that oozes flavor from each and every bite. You’ll need a lot of time to prepare for this one, but if you have enough of your schedule free, this will be a surefire favorite.

Next up is Mark Noguchi’s Kabocha Stew. Kabocha, for those that aren’t familiar, is a kind of squash, and in Noguchi’s recipe, you’ll be fusing it together with a generous helping of meat and other vegetables to create a creamy stew that warms the soul.

Lastly, you’ll want to try your hand at Sam Choy’s Portuguese Sausage Stuffing. This recipe goes “full Hawaiian,” calling for both sausage and diced bacon in the mix, and with seasonings and chopped sweet potatoes to help balance the flavor.

Any one of these recipes will add a dose of Hawaiian style to your upcoming Thanksgiving festivities; pull all three off, and your guests will have an experience they won’t soon forget!
